Even though the first snowflakes are still months away, Brotherhood Mutual property claims manager Tom Lichtenberger recommends
that churches start to prepare now for cold weather.
In a typical year, Brotherhood Mutual handles hundreds of weather-related claims, which include frozen pipes, water damage, and damage from roofs collapsing under heavy loads of snow and ice. In fact, the company handles at least three times as
many claims related to winter weather as it does fire claims. The most frequent claims involve damage from frozen pipes, but the most costly stem from failed roofs, Lichtenberger said. “When the weight of snow and ice causes a roof to collapse, the damage is almost always extensive,” he said. “In those cases, we usually see structural damage to walls and floors, as well as damage to insulation, furnishings, mechanical and electrical systems.” To prevent such losses, there’s plenty your church can do in the next few months to reduce the risk of weather problems.
